Episode 3.

“If our politicians always end up deceiving us, why then do we keep believing and voting for them over and over again, the former one was democracy for the people and they ended up giving democracy only to themselves and their families, the current one promised us change and the only change am seeing around is the constant travelling of our so called president” Nazaretha listed out his points during one of their numerous argument about politics.

“My friend stop wailing joor, how do you expect the current government to change everything that the previous government caused in the space of sixteen years, are you expecting them to perform some kind of magic or what” Kong countered

“if they can’t fix it in a year then they won’t be able to do it in four years” Nazaretha was about to counter back with more points but was distracted by the entrance of Slimmy into the living room, immediately he entered most of the guys wanted leave the room but he just signalled for them to stay and continue with whatever they were doing.

“You see this problems will always keep resurfacing as long as we are in a democratic world, I for one think that military should come and take over again”said Slimmy.

“Military?” everyone in the living room exclaimed, everyone except Gentle who had his headphones plugged into his ears and couldn’t hear what they were all conversing, he was probably lost in thoughts also.

“Yes military, firstly you see in military regime it’s only few set of people that have the ability to embezzle funds unlike democracy which every stupid dog that calls himself or herself a politician can chop the national cake anyhow. Secondly there will be orderliness and fear for power, imagine the case of that opposition governor that went as far as china to block the president’s Mission over there, if to say na military regime na from airport to prison straight ” Slimmy explained while they all watched and laughed at his suggestions and points.

“But Slimmy forget oo, That governor is the bravest yoruba man I have ever seen, he is braver than all your yoruba politicians put together” Nazaretha wanted to make his point but couldn’t finish before Kong countered him “Guy abeg no talk am again, you think say our own politicians be like your own, you are just a wailer”.

“And you are a bloody zombie living in the zoo” Nazaretha snapped at him but couldn’t continue before Slimmy’s phone rang, Slimmy signalled for them to be silent.

“Hello bossman……… Noo it’s not like that bossman….. we didn’t think you will be interested in such I minor issue…… but we….. but…… we……we…. okay …. okay bossman… we are very sorry”….”shit” he exclaimed after terminating the call. Everybody stopped what they were doing and starred at him.

“Out, out everyone” he shouted and almost immediately all of them rushed out. Gentle noticed the uneasiness and removed the headphones to know what was going on.

“Nazaretha and Kong stay back” Slimmy ordered. They both walked back to their seats and sat down, Gentle still couldn’t understand what was going on.

“Host is in town” Slimmy said softly after a short period of time. Immediately he said that, they all were taken aback in fear as they all heard the news.
Host is the number one member of the Arch Angels on campus, ofcos he also has superiors outside campus, different Ex members of the Arch Angels when they were in the university but their rule in the cult is that you can only be an Ex member when you are dead so therefore all of them were still very much involved in the activities of the Arch angels even after becoming politicians, top bankers and many more. Host is popular for his heartlessness, wickedness and his unforgiving spirit, his philosophy is that if you fuck up once then it must be treated regardless of who you are.

“And to top it all, he has heard about El salaam’s dropping and he is very angry that we took matters into our own hands without consulting him” Slimmy contd

“But he wasn’t around na” Kong replied in objection.

“Should I call his number and tell him you said that?” Slimmy asked Kong what he himself knew was a rhetorical question and as expected he got no reply from Kong.

“I saw this coming” Gentle spoke barely audibly.

“Trouble knocketh on our door and we knoweth not what we can do” Nazaretha spoke in his funny English but none of them had the balls to laugh, even Nazaretha didn’t intend to be funny when he spoke like that, they were all aware of the kind of trouble Host is going to cause for them, the first unwritten rule in the arch angel’s rulebook is ‘The fear of Host is the beginning of wisdom’…..

Three different lectures and she still wasn’t as bored as she used to be after a long day at school, there is this drive pushing and giving her strengths but she herself doesn’t know the source of the strength or the catalyst of the drive. She wondered if it was the fine weather, the calm breeze blowing from the trees beside their lecture hall in the stead of the scorchy heat of the sun that always dehydrate her days before, “that must be it, it’s the fine weather ” she concluded in her mind knowing perfectly well that she was just lying to herself, she very well knew she was only being excited about the thoughts of seeing the guys on her way to the car park just like she sees them whenever she waited for afternoon lectures, the thoughts of seeing Slimmy filled her heart with joy. She checked her phone to check the time and she saw it was already past four o’clock ‘Yes’ she said in her mind after the lecturer rounded up the class and exited.
Slowly, confidently and happily she embarked on her journey to the car park, she kept her gaze fixed on her phone as she always does so as not to miss a step or feel shy due to the starring from the guys that were always there with Slimmy. She was almost halfway there when she felt the awkward silence, gradually she raised her head and realised the spot was empty, it was strange for that spot to be totally empty, she reduced her speed further more to a snail’s speed, looking around as if to see if they were hanging close by. There was still no sign of anyone let alone Slimmy around, sadness befell her because she had fantasised over and over about how she was going to say hello to them for the first time today, her catwalk and voice rehearsals were all wasted after all the stress. ‘shit’ she cussed under her breath.

“Looking for someone Miss Hadijat?” Gentle asked as he popped out of nowhere

“Looking for someone Miss Hadijat?” Gentle asked as he popped out of nowhere.

“Oh!” She smiled and turned back. Gentle grabbed her hand and placed a light kiss on the back of her palm.

“Good afternoon, how are you doing today miss?” He asked, smiling. He had planned for the day already, he had studied her timetable from her department’s board and found out her closing time. He also took time to find out where and how she parks her car and what time she comes for it.

He was neatly dressed in a pair of blue jean and white Polo shirt, a pair of white sneakers to match the clothes. He had everything he was going to say to her rehearsed and perfected.

“Good afternoon, I’m fine” Hadijat replied, still staring around to catch a glimpse of anyone else around.

“You seem to be waiting for someone” Gentle said, he turned back to check what she was staring at.

“Yes,” she quickly acted along. “I was expecting a friend to join me” she added with a smile and turned back to Gentle after seeing that no one else was around.

He stood still and stared into her eyes, placing his hands on each side of her arms just below the shoulder. “You look beautiful today,” he complimented, running his eyes down her body and her legs.

She was dressed in a pink blouse and a white skirt which stopped a little above her knees. Her black handbag hung on her shoulder. She had light makeup on.

“Thank you,” she replied, trying to force a smile. She started walking slowly, making his hands fall off her body.

“So, how was lectures today?” Gentle began to walk with her.

“Fine, thanks” she answered less enthusiastically. “What about your brother?” She paused and glanced back at the point where the boys usually hung around.

“My brother is fine. And what about… ?” He wanted to ask about Rofiat but Hadijat cut in.

“Is he not coming today?” Her eyebrows raised as she asked.

“Who? My brother?”

“Yes, your twin” she confirmed.

“Is he not coming where?” He asked, wondering why she was asking about Slimmy.

“I thought you guys loved to hang around here?” She said and continued to walk.

“Yes, he’s busy with some assignments” he answered.

“But is he still coming here today?” She persisted.

“I don’t think so. Let’s talk about something else” Gentle proposed, really desperate to change the topic.

“Slimmy is a student of what department?” She asked about Slimmy again as if she didn’t hear his last statement.

He was getting surprised about her sudden interest in Slimmy who had wanted to kill her at the point she slapped him if not for his pleas. “Why don’t you ask Slimmy your questions when you see him?” He voiced out.

She paused and glanced at his face, smiling. “I’m sorry, it’s just that the way he talked that day was unusual”

Gentle smiled back, happy that she apologized. “He talks like that, he’s usually strict with everybody regardless of the gender” he said and they continued walking.

“It’s okay” she said. They walked in silence till they got to the car park. They stood behind the boot of her ash colour Camry pencil. The car was gift from her father on her eighteenth year birthday. She had long learnt how to drive before she was eighteen but since she wasn’t up to the legal age, she was not allowed to own a car yet. Even when her father gave her the car at eighteen, eyebrows were raised and some people had told the father that as a girl, she was too young to start going around with a car but none could win the argument against the man as he was always ready to shower his money on his daughter, regardless of if she was getting spoilt by his actions or not.

Gentle stylishly stretched his left hand towards her right hand and gripped her fingers gently. She glanced at his face, surprised at his gesture but he kept a smiling face. His smiles was annoying her but she still manage to reply him with a fake smile.

“Hadijat!” Someone called from behind as Gentle was about to start talking. Hadijat heaved a sigh of relief as she recognized Halimat’s voice, at least she now had an excuse to leave Gentle. He released her fingers and they both turned to see the person calling.

“So since you left school, you’ve not gotten home yet. Thank God, I’ve not boarded a bike yet. We can go home together now’ Halimat said facing Hadijat. “Good after…noon” she turned to acknowledge the presence of the guy with her sister but the smile on her face gradually faded as she recognized Gentle.

“Good afternoon” Gentle replied, his voice clearly showed that he was not too happy about the disturbance.

“I think I should leave you guys since you’re busy. I’ll go home with a bike, Hadijat would meet me later” Halimat said and was about to walk away.

“I’d like to go now, I need to help her fix something” Hadijat dragged her back by the hand as she said to Gentle.

Gentle sighed. “Okay, may I get your digits then?” He asked, taking out his phone from his pocket. He swiped it open with the tip of his thumb.

She swallowed and stared at his face, his eyes showed his eagerness to start typing her number. She didn’t want to make him feel embarrassed or regret pardoning her for slapping him, so she reluctantly called out the digits to him. Maybe he wouldn’t be a bad friend anyway.

“Thank you, I’ll give you a call later today” he said as he locked back the phone’s screen and returned it into his pocket.

“Alright, bye” she said, expecting him to start leaving.

“Ermm… I’ll like to watch you drive away first” he said with a smile, pocketing his two hands.

! That is nice of you” she flashed her teeth at him before turning to Halimat. “Let’s go please”

They both turned to the other side and entered into the car while Gentle stepped away from behind the boot and watched the car reverse and turn. The car zoomed off after Hadijat waved him goodbye.

Gentle stood still and stared for about a minute, thinking of what of kind of girl she was. She must be a very inquisitive one, he thought , considering the manner at which she was asking about Slimmy just because of the way he talked to her. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath, wondering what it would be like when she finally says yes to him and becomes his girlfriend. He’ll do everything to keep her and make her happy. Protect her, treat her like a Queen and do anything to satisfy her.

He dipped his hands into his pocket and began to walk slowly away, humming a Nigerian love song tone as he went.

Hadijat opened the door slowly, poking in her head first before the whole body. She closed the door and smiled at Halimat who was seated on the couch with her hands folded and a face expression of someone who was ready with a fight. She ignored her and began to proceed towards her room. They had not spoken any word to themselves in the car but she knew from Halimat’s expression that she was up to something.

“What do you think you were doing with that guy?” Halimat finally sprang up with the topic Hadijat was wishing she wouldn’t talk about.

Hadijat paused and turned. She rolled her eyes and head in a girlish manner, spreading her palms out as if to ask for the relevance of the question. “What was I doing with him?”

“Yes!” Halimat slammed. “That is not the kind of guy you’re supposed to be moving with on campus”

“And who told you I was moving with him?” Hadijat scoffed. “He met me on my way back from school and was trying to engage me in a conversation”

“But you should have told him you were rushing home to do your assignments”

“Why should I do that?” She raised her eyebrows. “Why should I put away someone who’s trying to strike a friendly conversation”

“Friendly conversation my foot!” She paused and gasped. “Friendly conversation with a notorious person?”

“Oh please Halimat. Don’t let’s talk about this again” Hadijat raised her palm and waved a finger to emphasize her point. “He wasn’t even the one I wanted to see on that route”

“Oh!” Halimat’s eyes widened. “So you have another special one you wanted to see”

“Please Halimat, I need to go rest” Hadijat said and walked away tiredly.

Halimat sat back on the couch, folding her arms. She rested back and crossed her feet. She knew her Hadijat was daring but she thought slapping guys was the height of it. She couldn’t understand how she could be so daring to want to move with dangerous guys too. The madness must be stopped, she had to report Hadijat to Rofiat, the eldest amongst them.

“Don’t I have a choice to choose who I roll with on campus anymore” Hadijat said almost shouting.

“Yes you have lost that opportunity since you stopped using your sense to select who and who not to roll with” Rofiat replied in a much calmer tone than that of Hadijat’s.

“But when you made the choice to join whatever and do whatever you did, nobody stopped you” Hadijat spoke again still on top of her voice.

“And that was because I had no one to curb me and I will never open my eyes and watch you my younger ones to thread on the same path that destroyed my life, one more word from you right there and I will teach you the lesson of your life” Rofiat roared and the whole house was filled with terror, she has never lost her cool with her sisters like this before. Halimat who was astonished at how angry Rofiat got just stayed silent as they both watched her pick up her car keys and left the house. It took Halimat some few more seconds before she could hear Hadijat sobbing.
“Am sorry” Halimat said softly to Hadijat after minutes of silence between them “We just don’t want you to make any mistakes, you know you are like a sister to us” she paused as Hadijat raised her eyebrows after she mentioned the word Sister.

“So now am like a sister to you ?” Hadijat asked sarcastically. “Yes you are like a sister to us” Halimat replied her.

“Stop saying that already, you girls are my sisters, my only sisters” Hadijat said as she moved to the couch where Halimat was seating. “Am sorry sis, I shouldn’t have argued with you and Rofiat because of some dude” she whispered into Halimat’s ear as they hugged each other. “It’s okay sister, it happens sometimes” Halimat whispered back. At that moment Hadijat phone beeped and she went to grab her phone and saw a whatsapp message popped in from a number that wasn’t saved on her contact.

‘hello beautiful’ she read the message to herself barely audibly. She chose not to reply until she was sure about who sent the message, she clicked on the profile picture and after loading for some seconds, the picture finally popped out showing Gentle and Slimmy’s faces, both standing closely at that same spot they used to chill at, her heart melted as she saw the smile on Slimmy’s face in the picture, after lot of staring, she exited the picture and went to read the status message of the profile.

My name is Gentle… but am not a Gentleman…” was the status message on the profile.

“Hey” she decided to reply the message after lots of considerations.

“How are you dearie, hope you got home on time” she read out again and was about to reply when Halimat called her from the kitchen. “Am good and I did, thanks but I have to go now, chat later” she scribbled and rushed to the kitchen.
“Guy, guy give me my phone oo” Gentle shouted as he pursued Slimmy around the house.

“Give fire, you dey craze, you just believe say you fit just dey press your phone make you dey laugh alone abi” Slimmy protested as he keeps running haphazardly in the house trying to avoid being apprehended by his brother.

“Wetin concern you if I dey laugh now, na your mouth I dey carry laugh” Gentle

“Tell me who you dey chat with wey dey make you smile” Slimmy said. They kept on running after each other till they both got exhausted and Gentle decided to settle down on the sofa while Slimmy stood close to the door staying at alert in case Gentle wants to come for the phone, he kept on drawing different patterns to unlock the phone. He was about drawing the third pattern when Gentle rushed towards him and he also rushed towards the door which was flipped opened suddenly, it made Slimmy bump into the person at the door, he was angry at the person that just opened the door so suddenly, he turned around to see who it was and was shocked to see who was at the door. Gentle had stopped charging towards him earlier after seeing who was at the door, he just froze on his feet.

“Host” Slimmy stammered as he stared into the huge figure standing right in front of him, For some seconds, Host stood at the door and kept looking from Slimmy to Gentle and then back to Slimmy, he was looking at them with some sort of disappointment and disgust in his eyes.

“The white tigers are planning day and night about how to take over the campus and here you are, both of you playing hide and seek, such an exhibition of leadership attributes from the both of you” Said Host as he shoved Slimmy aside and walked into the living room majestically. “Where’s everyone” he asked.

“They should be at our hangout” Slimmy replied.

“The leaders are playing hide and seek and their boys are hanging out when the enemies are planning their downfall day and night” Said Host emphasising the ‘day and night ‘. He paused and looked around the house, he then walked slowly to the fridge and brought out a bottle of beer.

“Go and get everyone for an emergency meeting, and when I mean everyone, I mean your inner circus only, don’t go and bring fu<k boys here if you are sure you don’t want to pack dead bodies out of here at the end of the day” Host threatened but it’s not actually a threat because sometimes ago when they were having a meeting, he shot at two guys who gave him wrong suggestions. One died immediately and one lost his right arm, no one has heard from him ever since he was dumped at an hospital far from the university, some even concluded that he was dead already.

Immediately he gave out the order, Slimmy and Gentle walked out of the house and went ahead to carry out his orders as swiftly as they could.
